The Oracle

This Oracle is wildly, ridiculously, immensely NOT suitable for work.

It’s comprised of photos of over 60,000 tags left at the Roots Network installation at Dreamscapes in Salt Lake City, over a period of nine months spanning 2020-2021. Participants were asked to write answers to a series of questions on recycled cardboard tags, and to hang them on the installation. Roughly, these questions were: What inspires you, What makes you happy, and What will your legacy be?

The answers come from all age groups and many different cultures and languages. They are by turns funny, wise, cliche, profound, cute, profane, witty, insulting, joyful, triggering, optimistic, depressive, suicidal, solipsistic, drugged-out, ecstatic, confused, trivial, incomprehensible, and illegible.

The tags have been lightly filtered for hate speech, but everything else that was added to the installation is there, ranging from cosmic wisdom to political stumping to Instagram and Snapchat handles and Venmo panhandling. There is even a toddler’s shoe in there, and a wad of used gum. If you choose to proceed, do so with good humor and broad-mindedness. You may receive great advice or insight, or you may have your core beliefs direly insulted. Or perhaps both at once!
